Failed in 1st wahing

I know this was an inexpensive comforter, but it was basically throwing my money away. I washed it before putting it on a spare bed, and the batting in the sides, where there wasn't any top stitching, went into lumpy clumps. The pillow sham is poorly made. Again, this was on sale and I'm not out a lot of money, so I'll just donate it to a shelter and it might bring joy to someone?
