New formula makes lips dry
Unfortunately I repurchased this without realizing they reformulated to remove the lanolin and petroleum. The new formulation is awful. When I first started using it, I had to constantly reapply. After some uses, I realized it actually leaves my lips drier than before. Do not recommend at all. No clue why companies like Kiehls reformulates holy grail products like this.

I have reordered this product over and over again. I love the way it goes on, the finish it provides and how easy it is to carry with me.

THIS NEW FORMULA IS AWFUL!!!
WHY DID YOU CHANGE THIS FORMULA??? I have been buying Lip Balm #1 for DECADES, and I purchase 10 at a time because I leave them in every purse, bathroom, desk, etc. Well I finally opened one that has your "new" formula and it is AWFUL. The texture is just wrong - it sits on my lips and then disappears in a minute or so. I just went through my stock of Lip Balm #1 and threw out all the new ones, and I pray that by the time I finish the last of your original formula you will have come to your senses and dumped this new formula. WHY RUIN THE BEST LIP BALM IN THE WORLD? Who is running your company? Restore the original and if you want to keep this awful new product, call it something else. You just lost a devoted customer (since the 1980's). Let me know when you come to your senses.

Response from kiehls.com
Hello Matilda1789! We are deeply sorry to hear about your immense disappointment regarding the change to our beloved Lip Balm #1. For over forty years, this balm has been a staple in so many homes, and we completely understand how frustrating it is when a classic formula you have relied on for decades is updated. To meet our ongoing commitments to sustainability, we transitioned to a petrolatum-free, plant-based wax blend featuring nourishing shea butter and squalane. To help this new botanical formula perform at its best, we suggest applying it to slightly damp lips—such as immediately after washing your face or stepping out of the shower—which helps the plant-based oils lock in that deep, comforting hydration more effectively. We are sharing your invaluable loyalty and your strong desire to see the original, classic formula return directly with our development and executive teams.
Decent not Great
Runs out quickly and not the very best on the market. Gets job done.

Thank you for sharing your honest review of Kiehl's Lip Balm #1. We're glad you liked the glossy finish, but we're sorry it did not feel deeply moisturizing or absorbing. Formulated with Squalane and Petrolatum, this classic balm acts as a protective shield. Its primary job is to create an occlusive barrier that seals moisture in and blocks dry air out. On very dry lips, this can sometimes feel like it is sitting on top of the skin. For deeper hydration, we recommend dabbing a tiny bit of water or a hydrating toner onto your lips right before applying the balm to trap the moisture directly into the skin. We hope this tip helps and thank you for being a valued Kiehl's member!
Not the No.1 lip balm anymore
This is not the No.1 lip balm anymore. It is definitely not the lip balm I have used for years. I notice in this description that it’s saying this is the same thing from 1969 - this isn’t true! The previous lip balm with petroleum kept my lips moist and in good condition. It was more expensive than other lip balms on the market but was the only one where my lips were never chapped or dry. I am so disappointed with the ingredient change. I am constantly re-applying throughout the day. Who has the time? I read the comments from Kiehls about petroleum - petroleum is a by-product of oil. It is the part that is not used when oil is being produced. The self-righteousness and double-standards about this is amazing to me. As long as people are driving, using aircraft or ships and countless other machines that use oil, petroleum is going to be produced as a ‘by-product’ - it is already there. PEG-pentaerythritol ether which is in the new formula is derived from petroleum and is also non-biodegradable. The previous formula (the one I used for years right up until this change) was the best. Please bring it back. If not, call this a different name as it is confusing and a bit tricksy and make a much better lip balm that does not make my lips drier than what they were and is worthy of the price.

A really soothing lip balm
This lip balm softens my chapped lips amazingly. It goes on smoothly and so soothing. I keep this balm in my handbag as well as one tube in my car.
