Nail care 101: Nail secrets for a flawless finish

Beautiful nails are a small detail that add polish (pun intended!) to your everyday look. Booking a manicure or pedicure isn't necessarily required, either. Well-groomed nails—from bare, buffed sets to bold nail art design—are achievable at home with the right tools and a thoughtful regimen you practice consistently.

The prep step: essential nail tools

A nail care kit is a must for completing at-home maintenance, whether you're a devout DIY-er or in between appointments. For a chic mani/pedi anytime, you can start with the basics.

Nail clippers. Fingernails that are regularly trimmed not only look neat, they're also less prone to breaking and snagging. It's always a good idea to thoroughly disinfect your nail clippers or scissors using isopropyl alcohol beforehand to stop the spread of germs.

Cuticle pushers. Carefully pushing back your cuticles helps remove buildup of dead skin and creates the appearance of longer, more defined nail beds. Plus, doing so may help your nail polish last longer.

High-quality nail files. A glass nail file is the gold standard, but a sturdy emery board does the trick just fine, too. Whichever style you go with, using it regularly is the key to preventing jagged edges that can snag on your clothes and hair.

Buffing blocks. Smoothing, shaping, and shining your tips is an important prep step prior to polish. A durable buffing block can help create a salon-quality surface for the rest of your nail art routine.

Bring the studio home: specialized nail tools

The more you do your own manicures, the more you may want advanced nail care tools to perfect your techniques and designs. Investing invarious tools and nail art accessories allows your creativity and skills to bloom    Rechargeable nail tools. As your at-home manicure skills evolve, rechargeable nail tools can take your routine to the next level. Electric nail drills, compact e-files, and cordless buffers make shaping, smoothing, and refining nails more precise and efficient—bringing a salon-like finish to your own setup without the constant need for replacements or manual effort.    Nail brushes. Just as you exfoliate your face and body, your nails deserve that same level of attention, too. Lightly brushing underneath and around your fingernails to clear away gunk is a sign of good upkeep.    Dotting pens and tools. An at-home manicure doesn't mean basic or boring. You can set gems using dotters or create a cool ombre effect with a sponge tip—just have fun with it!

Create a clean slate: nail polish remover

It's easy to grab any old polish remover when you're ready to switch things up, but one with too-harsh ingredients can dry out your nails and fingertips. A gentle formula that both supports healthy nails and effectively removes polish the ideal combo.

Acetone-free removers. Acetone quickly erases old polish, but it can also strip your nails of their natural oils. Nail polish removers containing gentler solvents like soy and ethyl acetate are non-drying alternatives that get the job done.    Hydrating removers. Swiping away nail polish can be a drying process to your nails and hands. Looking for vitamins A, C, and E as well as plant-based oils (including jojoba, sweet almond, and lemongrass) in your nail polish remover can help hydrate your skin and nails while you reset your look.

Build the perfect base: nail treatments

Who doesn't want beautiful, strong nails that look just as good nude as they do polished? Preventing breakage, dullness, and more calls for a nutrient-rich nail care treatment in your routine.

Brightening products. The dyes found in dark shades of nail polish, especially when used without a base coat, can temporarily stain the nail surface. This is where lemon peel and lemon extract can come in. Products with these ingredients aim to conceal yellow stains and discoloration.

Strengthening treatments. It's a good idea to take breaks from polish every now and then, as the process can make nails weak and brittle. A nail growth polish or strengthener infused with keratin or peptides is ideal.

Repair solutions. Self-care enthusiasts swear by cuticle oils, balms, and serums. Massaging your fingertips with your go-to nail repair solution a few times per week or as directed on the label can help soothe damaged skin while it heals.

Polish to perfection: nail polish & press-ons

The nail polish wall at your local salon is an endless source of inspiration—but you don't need hundreds of options to create looks you love. A curated collection of polishes works for any season or occasion.

Nail polish. Classic nail polish remains the most versatile way to refresh your look. Easy to apply, switch out, and experiment with, it's ideal for everyday wear and seasonal color play. From sheer neutrals to bold statement shades, traditional polish offers endless room to express your style without long-term commitment. A well-edited collection makes it simple to match your nails to your mood, outfit, or the moment.

Nail care tip: Seasonal nail color changes are an easy way to refresh your look throughout the year, with rich tones and moody neutrals often leading the way in fall nail trends.

Gel polish. Gel polish delivers a longer-lasting, high-shine finish that resists chips and fading for weeks. It's a go-to for those who want a salon-quality look with minimal upkeep. With a wide range of colors and finishes available, gel polish allows you to enjoy durable, polished nails that still feel expressive and fashion-forward. Proper curing and removal tools are key to maintaining nail health while enjoying extended wear.

Press-on nails. Press-ons have evolved far beyond a quick fix—they're now a stylish, customizable option for salon-level looks at home. Available in endless shapes, lengths, and finishes, they make it easy to switch up your manicure in minutes. From soft, natural styles to bold, trend-forward designs, press-ons offer flexibility without the commitment, making them perfect for special occasions or everyday rotation.

Steps for an at-home nail care routine

Mineral Fusion cuticle oil

A trip to the spa or salon is luxurious but not always in the budget. Doing your nails in the comfort of your own home is a treat-yourself moment that's always within reach.

Step 1: Cleansing and prep. A clean slate is the foundation of a professional-grade manicure. After removing your polish, thoroughly washing your hands—including scrubbing underneath the nails using a mild soap—helps get rid of dust and excess oil that could impact how well your polish adheres.

Step 2: Cuticle care. Massaging in a cuticle oil or cream rehydrates the nail bed and surrounding skin. Afterwards, pushing back your cuticles instead of cutting them is a safer way to get the look of longer nails.

Step 3: Nail filing. Filing your nails slowly in one direction (not back and forth) using light pressure is a major cheat code in creative nails care. This helps minimize annoying cracks and splits that impede nail length retention.

Step 4: Moisturizing. Dry, uncomfortable hands can happen in any season. A hydrating cream, especially when sealed in with a restorative oil, helps soothe your hands and nails after abrasive brushing and filing.

Step 5: Nail strengthening treatments. Fragile nails could always use a little extra TLC. Nail growth polishes and other solutions containing strengthening ingredients (We're talking keratin, biotin, and peptides) are nail care heroes.

Step 6: Applying polish properly. Two strokes down the center and sides with a swipe across the tip is a salon-approved technique to get a more even application. Don't skimp on the base and top coats for even better staying power, either—they're kind of like the face primer and setter of nail care.

Common nail care mistakes to avoid

Mario Badesku rose hand cream

Even those habits you don't think too much about can ruin the appearance of your nails or cost you a visit to the dermatologist. A little mindfulness goes a long way in preventing certain kinds of damage to the nail bed and cuticle.    Skipping hydrating products. Washing your hands over and over can strip your nails and skin of much-needed moisture, leaving them cracked and flaky. To keep them hydrated, a rich hand cream followed up by a cuticle oil soothes and deeply nourishes these sometimes overlooked parts of the body.

Peeling off nail polish. We know how tempting it is to try to peel off stubborn nail polish, but this is painful and thins out your nail plate. The soak-off method using a polish remover—especially if you have gel polish on—takes a bit more time, but it's so worth it.    Using harsh chemicals. Ingredients such as formaldehyde and camphor in cosmetics can do more harm than good, as they're known to cause redness and irritation. But you can take the extra step to stay safe by picking non-toxic nail products labeled "3-free" or higher.    Regularly maintaining your nails can be a small part of looking (and feeling) your best. Consistent nail care using quality products, whether that's at home or at your fave salon, is essential for healthy-looking tips.
